Photo: Out of the attic

Earl Johnson of Sperryville turned up this postcard on eBay — an artist’s rendering of the former Black Kettle Motel on Warren Avenue (opposite the Washington fire hall), which started life in the 1950s as the Manahoac Lake Motel, named for the Indian tribe thought by many to have camped on the site, with its small natural lake (most of which was filled in when two-lane U.S. 211 was expanded to four lanes in the late 1970s). The ruins of the motel — part of a tract that the town of Washington still hopes to purchase with grants and private funding and turn into a wetlands park — are still visible from Warren Avenue.

I like the picture on the right. Nature Had its way with it. In my opinion it has a rustic look to it, rough at the edges, but very real! Thanks for sharring. Larry Chino Ca.
