RAWL Dogs: Chip
Posted on September 9, 2010 | No CommentsThe news just came in, and it’s terribly exciting! I’m growing a heart! That’s what they’re doing for me here in Amissville. I’m only two years old, and arrived here frightened of my shadow. But there is new life for this two-year-old Yellow Lab mix:... -
RAWL Dogs: Gypsy
Posted on September 2, 2010 | No CommentsI’m a four-year-old Chihuahua mix who is called Gypsy. Our sort is thought of as bossy and yappy, but that is not my way. Everyone should have a model, a creature that one looks to for guidance, inspiration; for an attitude about life. My model... -
RAWL Dogs: Carey
Posted on August 26, 2010 | No CommentsMy name is Carey, and I would like to count on your support in the coming election. You see, while I am only six months old, I am always the leader in any play group. Clearly, this qualifies me to serve on the school board,... -
RAWL Dogs: Dillon
Posted on August 19, 2010 | No CommentsDoes it look as if I am in good shape? You bet I am! Hey, if you took rigorous walks as we do here in scenic Landfillville, you would be tight and toned, too. I’m Dillon, a mix of Australian Shepherd and Sheltie, and I’m... -
RAWL Dogs: Abby
Posted on August 5, 2010 | No CommentsHello, my name is Abby. While I am just arriving at four months of age, I have already learned one of the most important lessons of life. That is, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. Therefore, I will always be your... -
RAWL Dogs: Gunny
Posted on July 29, 2010 | No CommentsI am only three years old, but have already learned the secret to making a successful long-lasting relationship. It comes from the great 20th century American philosopher Henny Youngman. It is to have dinner out twice a week with candles, wine and atmosphere. My wife... -
RAWL Dogs: Harriet
Posted on July 22, 2010 | No CommentsThe yearbook entry says my name is Harriet, and I am a 4- or 5-year-old Pointer. The description is of a “very, very nice dog.” I’m thought to be a quiet companion, but when you come visit you will find me with your ears. That... -
RAWL Dogs: Peanut
Posted on July 15, 2010 | No CommentsPeanut is my name, but that is merely a cover, a “nom de shelter.” Inside me, deep in my soul, I am “Lion.” I am so ferocious, so thoroughly in command, that the captain of my platoon permits me to display my Jimmy Cagney poster... -
RAWL Dogs: BB
Posted on July 8, 2010 | No CommentsMy name is BB. That’s all, just the two letters. You could say one stands for beagle and the other is for blue, cause I am kinda blue like a cattle dog. You must admit that my name is really easy to remember and really... -
RAWL Dogs: Gus
Posted on July 1, 2010 | No CommentsWhen you come over to the shelter, don’t be surprised if you hear laughter. We are still giggling over what happened during the Shakespeare show the other night; you know, at the summer theater we have here. During Act V of Macbeth, when Lady M. hollers, “Out damned spot! Out, I say!,” we looked around and there was Spot, the cute mutt from Chester Gap, slinking out the back. We have been laughing since — especially the Beagles. They love that stuff. -
RAWL Dogs: Hank
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsHello, I’m Hank, and you’ve seen me before, right here in these pages. I’m in for a second go-round because I’m a beagle who qualifies for senior discounts. More than that, I am planning to get my babyhood back. You see, I need a child, a youngster of your sort to play with. That’s me in the photo with Lucas DuMez, one of my young friends. As long as there’s a kid around, I am a kid, too. Yes, I need a kid. Bring one with you and we’ll go home together! -
RAWL Dogs: Lea
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsWhen they created the word demure, they were thinking of someone like me. I am only a year old, and my parentage is mostly Boxer. But I am far from the Mike Tyson pattern — instead you’ll find me quiet and clean and reserved. That... -
RAWL Dogs: Bailey
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsI’m a medium-size, five-year-old dog and I am part Hound, part Lab. That’s a deep, rich, chocolate brindle coat that I wear. My name is Bailey, but I don’t really need a name, because you hardly know that I am there. Some people think I am part cat, because I am so clean and so quiet that I blend into the background. -
RAWL Dogs: Buddy
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsIf I am outside when you drive up to the shelter here in Amissville, you will hear me. My bass voice – rather musical, if I may say so – will ring out as you approach. In truth, it makes me sound bigger than I really am. This sound of greeting, or warning, will go well at your place, especially at night, should intruders on four feet or two feet venture near. My name is Buddy. There’s Shepherd and Great Dane in my DNA. I’m only a year and a half old, and in my short time here I’ve learned what a leash is for, and how we use it together. -
RAWL Dogs: Boon
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsGreetings! I am Boon and I am just 10 weeks old. I’m just a small ball of hair, kind of like a four-footed mop. You could roll me around the living room and, with a little tickling, I’d laugh all night long. You could have friends over and spend time guessing what heritage I might come from. Since it’s all mixed up, I become the catch-all: Rappahannock Mountain Dog. Tell you what: make up some papers and send them up to the AKC and watch them faint! -
RAWL Dogs: Sid
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No CommentsPlease look again at my picture. Identify the movie star that I resemble, if you can. Got it? My looks, and hence my name, are those of Sid in “Ice Age.” That is what movie experts in Amissville have concluded. So, I am Sid. I am a small hound, one that likes children and likes to retrieve, of all things! I am two years old and mature enough not to be flustered when you come around asking for autographs. -
RAWL Dogs: Jeremy
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No CommentsWhat do you get when you cross a Saint Bernard and a Boxer? Well, come over and see me, Jeremy, and you will discover that you get a big, smart, four-footed pal. One that is very bright, trained to an invisible fence; one who has... -
RAWL Dogs: Blazer
Posted on April 29, 2010 | No CommentsMy name is Blazer, and I am one of those mixture dogs. As you can see, I have the body and coloring of a beagle. But inside, I am a retriever: heart, brain and navigation system, I am a retriever. You throw it, or shoot... -
RAWL Dogs: Mocha
Posted on April 22, 2010 | No CommentsYou may know that rabbits reproduce quickly, but I am here to tell you that there aren’t enough of them. There never will be enough for me — never. Lemme at ‘em! Why do you think I was put on this Earth? I am a... -
RAWL Dogs: Ike
Posted on April 15, 2010 | No CommentsI have to chuckle to myself because of my name: Ike. I mean, all of you who are named for kings and queens you don’t even remember, and I am named for a great president. I am just one of the kindergarten over here —... -
RAWL Dogs: Carney
Posted on April 8, 2010 | No CommentsYou know how sometimes you order something and what is delivered is just not right? Well, I ordered real legs and what I got was these short little stubbies. But I’m still a happy and friendly Corgi-Lab mix, a big dog with little dog legs.... -
RAWL: Berry
Posted on April 1, 2010 | No CommentsMy name is Berry, and I am the dog you will be reading about in Guinness’ book. I am, you see, going for the world record of resting. Having thought it through, I think a dog like me can sleep, snooze, nap, rest, and dream... -
RAWL Dogs: Hannah
Posted on March 25, 2010 | No CommentsWhen the Beagle and the Basset Hound elope what you get is a litter of loyal, friendly, four-legged creatures like me who are just like those hot rods in Southern California: way low to the ground. I’m Hannah, about 5 years old if you must... -
RAWL Dogs: Libby
Posted on March 18, 2010 | No CommentsHello, friends. My name is Libby, and I have learned that these are the best years. That is, I am a senior dog, a mix of Black Lab and Rottweiler. I am wonderful on a walk with you, and love to ride in a car.... -
RAWL Dogs: Brinks
Posted on March 11, 2010 | No CommentsYou can take me home and teach me all sorts of tricks. That’s because I’m not even three months old and, as you know, a young dog can learn all sorts of stuff. My name is Brinks and I’m a puppy’s puppy. Baby dog, through... -
RAWL Dogs: Daisy aka Callie
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No CommentsThere you have it: I go by either name, Daisy or Callie. The point is I am one year old, a German Shepherd mix, about 55 pounds. There is no dog, repeat no dog, you can find who is better with kids. That said, I... -
RAWL Dogs: Arrow
Posted on February 25, 2010 | No CommentsHey, I got it back! Yes, I’ve regained all the weight that I had lost, and am in perfect trim once again. Thanks so much for being concerned; it is nice to know that you cared. Yes, I came in here after being lost and... -
RAWL Dogs: Sable
Posted on February 18, 2010 | No CommentsWhile I am a spayed female three years old and 30 pounds, you don’t need me to tell you I am mostly Husky. You can tell that by the stare. Our breed has a look that goes through walls. Most mammals, and others simply wilt... -
RAWL: Daisy the Pug
Posted on February 4, 2010 | No CommentsThe newest fashions are out and I just love them! Argyles in lively reds; you will go crazy over my new jacket. It’s just the thing for the long walks on these cold winter days. There’s a whole canine line in this month’s issue of...
