"Dancing Bear" McDole to appear at high school

Rappahannock County High School will play host to a dancing bear this Saturday.

Ron "Dancing Bear" McDole, a defensive end for the Washington Redskins from 1971-78 and two-time Pro Bowler, will make an appearance at the high school to benefit the Rappahannock County School Sports Association (RCSSA).

Sonny Jurgenson allegedly gave McDole his nickname after witnessing the player's dance moves in a Washington, D.C., nightclub.

"He's here on a fund-raising mission to help raise money for school sports," said Terri Diley, who helped organize the event.

RCSSA is a volunteer group that provides support for athletic programs at Rappahannock schools.

At 4 p.m., McDole will lead an educational session for past and present members of the Rappahannock High School football team. Members of Culpeper recreational football teams are also invited to attend. The session will be held at the high school football field and is free of charge.

"This is my gift to them in hopes that we can build a really good team," Diley said.

At 5:30 p.m. the public will have an opportunity to meet McDole in the high school auditorium before he assumes the role of master of ceremonies for the Miss Skyline beauty pageant at 6 p.m.

McDole will run for King Skyline in the pageant, Diley said.

A $5 entrance fee will be charged for the pageant.

"We're working very hard to raise money to put lights on the football field," Diley said.

Barbecue will be sold and a signed helmet and clock will be auctioned.

Diley said that to attend the event McDole will be missing "draft day," in which former Redskins players provide autographs for new recruits on the team.

"McDole has decided after years of doing draft he's coming out here instead," she said. "I think that says a lot for the man himself."

Rappahannock High School is located at 12576 Lee Highway. Visit www.rappsports.org or call Terri Diley at 540-937-5485 for more information.
