Hot rods under a hot sun

Cherry red paint, sparkling chrome and fuzzy dice graced the grass field in front of the Link in Sperryville this past Saturday. One hundred and twenty-three enthusiasts from as far away as Virginia Beach and Maryland lined up their hot rods under a strong sun for the first annual Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church car and truck show.

The event drew about 300 people, organizers estimated, and benefited planned renovations to the Sperryville church.

"It’s been good," said Robert Jenkins, who helped put on the show.

Jenkins said he has lent a hand in several other car and truck shows in the area. He said he sent out an e-mail promoting the church show to past participants.

Those who showed up to marvel at the vehicles were entered to win door prizes including gift certificates to the Thornton River Grille in Sperryville, a barbecue set and a car detail kit.
