High school team takes second place at Skills-USA competition
A team of four Rappahannock County High School (RCHS) students placed second at the SkillsUSA state conference, Rappahannock technology education teacher Scott Schlosser reported. Cody Dodson, Taylor Yowell, Nathan Grant and Tyler Shoemaker took home a silver medal in the conference's team-works competition for a project that included plumbing, carpentry, masonry and electricity.
Rappahannock student Kelly Herrell competed in the job interview competition, in which she placed sixth in the state, and Katie Long placed fifth in the state commercial baking contest.
Elementary school to hold kindergarten registration May 6-8
Kindergarten registration for children who will be five years old on or before September 30th, 2008, will be held by appointment only at Rappahannock County Elementary School from May 6 to May 8, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
This registration must be done by a parent with legal custody of the child being registered. The parent will need to bring the child's birth certificate, social security card, school entrance health form (available from the child's doctor), and completed immunization record.
Please call the Rappahannock County Elementary School (RCES) office at 540-987-8259 to schedule your appointment. Parents are requested to bring your child to the registration for a short evaluation activity and an opportunity to visit a kindergarten classroom.
Band wins big at Williamsburg competition
Report from Rappahannock High School Band Director Matt Yonkey: "The bands totaled 19 trophies and plaques, earning every ensemble, section and individual award possible! The bands were very successful while competing against schools from Maine, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Virginia. The bands and distinct individuals earned highest honors in every possible category, including: Taylor Light - Concert Band Solo Distinction Award; Ryan Benyo - Jazz Band Solo Distinction Award; Evan Espinola - Jazz Band Solo Distinction Award; Noel Johns - Best Drum Major Award; Best Marching Drumline Award; Best Jazz Rhythm Section Award; Best Jazz Woodwind Section Award; Best Jazz Brass Section Award; 1st Place Concert Band Award with a rating of Superior; 1st Place Jazz Award with a rating of Superior; 1st Place Marching Award with a rating of Superior; Concert Band Champion; Jazz Band Champion; Marching Band Champion; Overall Grand Champion; Director's Award of Distinction."
The competition was held in Williamsburg, Va., over the weekend of April 18.
Elementary school band students sweep competitions
Director Ben Beasley reports: "Each of the students who performed earned a Superior rating, the highest achievable mark for the competition. This is the second year in a row that Rappahannock County Elementary School (RCES) has swept the competition with all Superior ratings. The students who performed are as follows: Brianna Winkworth (clarinet, 7th grade); Mimi White (flute, 6th grade); Courtney King (alto saxophone, 6th grade); Gus Norris (percussion, 5th grade); Nathan Hale (alto saxophone, 5th grade)."
The competition was held at Admiral Byrd Middle School in Winchester on April 19.

Wakefield names athletes of the month
Wakefield Country Day School’s (WCDS) female athlete for the month of March is Katherine Russo. She is no stranger to this award, having received it on numerous past occasions for various sports. According to WCDS Athletic Director Mike Kenney, "As Katherine has developed her skills in each of the three sports in which she has participated, coaches and players from opposing schools have recognized her abilities and her drive. Her passionate efforts are exhibited in practice, as well as during games, enabling her leadership skills to be set by example. Katherine’s play has allowed WCDS to overcome a slow start to its girls varsity soccer season and to post several impressive wins in recent weeks."
Wakefield Country Day School’s male athlete for the month of March is Adrian Wassel. In announcing this award, Athletic Director Mike Kenney noted, "Adrian is a young man whose play has made an immediate impact on the spring sports season. His ability not only to participate, but also to assist others with the basic skills of lacrosse, the rules and the fundamentals of the game, has been a major resource for the coaching staff. His knowledge of lacrosse has proven invaluable to the novice players on the team."

Farming field trip
In conjunction with their unit on farming, Ms. Liz Shaw’s 2nd-4th grade class took a field trip to Radical Roots Community Farm in Keezletown, Va., on April 23. Dave and Lee O’Neill, the founders of Radical Roots, invited the students out for a morning of farm fun and education.
Students visit animal shelter
On Friday, April 25, grades 2-4 traveled to Rikki’s Refuge in Orange, Va. The class went to learn more about farm animals, but also to learn about the operation of Rikki’s Refuge, which is a non-profit, no-kill animal sanctuary. The students had been collecting supplies for the refuge which they delivered upon arrival. The center is home to 1,200 animals of 18 different species, including emus, a peacock, pigs, birds, dogs and over six hundred cats.
The next day the class sold plants they had grown at the Waterpenny Plant Sale. The students raised $71, which they will donate to Rikki’s Refuge.
Goal reached to benefit rain forests
This week the 2nd-4th graders reached their goal of reading 100 books in the ClassroomsCare program. For each 100 books the students read Scholastic Book Clubs makes a donation towards saving 100 acres of rain forest.
Students visit Rappahannock senior center
Ms. Kitty Keyser’s nursery and kindergarten class visited the Rappahannock Senior Center in Washington, Va. The class entertained the seniors with recitations, dance and songs. The students also showed the seniors how to craft sculptures out of colored beeswax.
