'An editorial . . .is an expression of the editor’s opinion'
Having read several of Amy Hitt’s letters to the newspaper, I can see that she is a civic-minded, involved member of our community.I am mystified, however, as to why she believes it is out of line for the editor of the paper to have a divergent point of view on a debatable topic. An editorial, by definition, is an expression of the editor’s opinion, and the page itself is a forum for expressing different outlooks. The editor has done nothing scurrilous or inappropriate, and a glance at any national newspaper will attest to an editor’s right to personally respond to any issue.
Further, I have noticed lately that anyone who questions increased spending for our small school system is labeled as one who does not care about the schools or the students. To me, it sounds like a personal attack on integrity and character so as to squelch any objections or dialogue to the contrary. Debate over government spending has always been a healthy part of our democracy.
As for the examples of risk-taking that were cited, the light bulb and motorized vehicles were developed by entrepreneurs and inventors who put their own resources at risk, not the resources of their fellow taxpayers. The fruits of their risk-taking benefited the lives of all humanity in immeasurable ways. Can we say the same for stadium lights?
