Nancy Jones: "A trooper . . .a hard worker'
Nancy Jones, 83, is still going strong selling tickets for the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department's carnival this week.
Born and raised in Flint Hill, Jones has been selling tickets for 15 years, seven days a week. What she likes most about it "is getting to know the people," she said. "They mean the world to me and I feel like a mommy to them (the younger ticket buyers)."
She has traveled to Warrenton, Marshall and Front Royal this year in a new 2008 Chevy Colorado pickup selling tickets for it. The pickup is being raffled Saturday night. The most tickets she ever sold at one time was six books to one individual.
"This is my favorite truck that the fire department has raffled off," she said one morning this week, leaning on the truck at the fire department.
Each she looks forward to selling the raffle tickets but this will be her last year doing so, she said, because of health issues."She is a trooper, a hard worker and always pitching in to help whenever needed," said Bruce Williams, chief of the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
Jones will be trying to sell that last ticket Saturday night just before the clock strikes midnight. Then some lucky person's name will be drawn for the 2008 Chevy Colorado.
"All the proceeds from selling the tickets go back into the Flint Hill Fire Department," said Williams.
Jones has one wish.
"When I leave this life, I would like to have a photo of me with one of my trucks that was raffled off over the years placed in my casket," she said.
If anyone would like to buy a ticket for the Chevy Colorado, call the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department at 540-675-3286 or look for Jones with the bright blue Chevy pickup sitting in a parking lot somewhere trying to sell that last ticket before going home.
