Some in Chester Gap feeling forgotten

Some Chester Gap residents are feeling underserved in Rappahannock County's northern corner.

The citizen group Concerned Taxpayers of Rappahannock County held its monthly meeting Tuesday at the Chester Gap Fire Hall, and some of the attendees said the village does not get the services and attention it deserves.

Chester Gap is "the biggest populated place in Rappahannock County and we get the least services," said one man in the audience. He added that residents of the village are like orphans, to which several in the audience applauded and said, "Amen!"

Another woman suggested that there should be a recycling and refuse drop-off point in Chester Gap, so village residents do not need to drive all the way to Amissville or Rock Mills Road to get rid of their garbage.

Otherwise, the issues discussed were similar to those hit upon at Concerned Taxpayers' past three meetings. People expressed worries about their ability to shoulder an increasing property tax burden. Specifically, they complained about the land-use taxation system, the responsiveness of public officials to tax concerns, the lack of candidates to oppose incumbents in county elections, the size of the county schools budget and other costs of the county government.

About 35 people attended the gathering. It was the largest crowd at any of Concerned Taxpayers' four meetings so far.

The past three meetings were held at the Rappahannock County Library, and the group's organizer Tom Junk plans to continue rotating Concerned Taxpayer meetings to different locations around the county.

The next meeting of Concerned Taxpayers of Rappahannock County will be at the Amissville Fire Hall. The date has not yet been set.
