Williams' foundation receives $2,000 memorial gift

The Marshall Feeder Cattle Association, which promotes feeder calf sales through the Fauquier Livestock Exchange, is lending a helping hand to two local non-profit foundations.

The association has contributed $2,000 to the Mary Beth Williams' Memorial Foundation in Rappahannock County and $2,000 to the Sue Rucker Foundation in Fauquier County. These non-profit foundations promote educational and agricultural activities for the youth of the northern Piedmont.

Mary Beth Williams, 18, a senior at Rappahannock County High School, was killed in an automobile accident on Route 729 in Amissville in May 1997. She was a passenger in the front seat.

One of Mary Beth Williams' passions was the study of agriculture. The memorial foundation was established soon after the tragic accident.

The memorial fund has as its purpose the funding of scholarships for higher education, camp attendance and other activities for the youth of Rappahannock county.

The Williams' foundation contribution was given in memory of the late Jimmy Cannon. The Rucker foundation contribution was given in memory of the late John Rucker.

The majority of the cattle sold through the Fauquier Livestock Exchange comes from the counties of Fauquier, Rappahannock, Loudoun and Culpeper.

Sales are conducted on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month March through May and August through November. In June, July, December, January and February there is one monthly feeder sale which is normally conducted on the second Tuesday of the month.

Any producer wishing to market his or her livestock through one of these stated grade sales becomes a member of the association.

The membership funding to the association goes for advertising, Virginia state grader fees, teleconference sales, marketing efforts to buyers in other states and educational support for programs promoting agriculture for youth in this region.

Randall Updike, chairman of the board of the Mary Beth Williams' foundation in Rappahannock, joins the Sue Rucker foundation in Fauquier in the Mid-Atlantic Carcass Contest and Evaluation Program in expressing appreciation to the Marshall Feeder Cattle Association and the Fauquier Livestock Exchange for their contributions.
