Five Rappahannock 4-H members show hogs in show

The 2008 Culpeper-Madison Rappahannock (CMR) Farm Show was full of activities for people of all ages: a draft horse and mule show, rock crawling trucks, a petting zoo and cookie eating and cupcake decorating contests.

There was karaoke, a dance, many items to see and exhibit at the Homemaker’s building, and of course, many animals.

The 4-Hers could be seen caring for their animals in the barns and getting them ready for the various livestock shows, followed by the livestock sale Monday night.

This year, five 4-H members from Rappahannock County showed hogs: Caroline Massie, Tiffany Wayland, and Taylor, Kourtney and Allie Yowell. These 4-H members did extremely well, with the following results in their market hog classes:

Caroline Massie – 2nd, 3rd and 4th and Reserve Grand Champion.

Tiffany Wayland – 1st and 2nd

Taylor Yowell – 3rd

Kourtney Yowell – 4th

Allie Yowell – 3rd

Caroline Massie also submitted items in the Homemakers’ Building and received many first place ribbons, one fifth place ribbon, and a Best of Show for her senior scrapbook.

Many thanks go to the buyers of our 4-H members animals:

Virginia Tractor

Rose Hill Veterinary Practice

Rappahannock Farmers’ Cooperative (CFC)

Additional thanks go to sponsors of the Rappahannock County 4-H Livestock Club:

Rappahannock Farm Bureau

Settle’s Grocery

Rappahannock National Bank

If you have a 9 – 19 year old who would like to show an animal at next year’s CMR Farm Show, get involved in the 4-H Livestock Club. This club is free, fun and informative. The new club year begins Oct. 1.

Those who would like to learn more about other 4-H clubs and opportunities should call the Extension office at 540-675-3619.
