Blue Ridge Chorale Concert at The Theatre
Sing a song for unsung heroes
Sing from sea to shining sea
As the faithful sang before you
Sing the Song of Liberty.
These words by Pamela Martin echo the theme of the Blue Ridge Chorale Spring Concert, to be performed at The Theatre at Washington on Friday, May 9, at 8 p.m., under the direction of Virginia Erwin. Though heroes come in all shapes and sizes, the focus will be on heroes of war. Short accounts of three local heroes of three different wars will be narrated by Jon Krawchuck from Channel 21 TV.
"As the daughter of a WWII veteran and the wife of a Vietnam veteran, I have a profound respect for the patriotism and service exhibited by our soldiers and their families. I thought it appropriate that our concert feature a remembrance of special soldiers from the Culpeper and Rappahannock areas. Our concert of sacred and patriotic music is meant to honor them, and to inspire us all to be grateful for their examples of courage and sacrifice," noted Virginia Ewin.
The first part of the program will feature Franz Schubert's "Mass in G," one of the treasures of early 19th century choral music. In the second part the Chorale will perform parts of Randall Thompson's "Testament of Freedom" along with well-loved traditional and patriotic songs, and an exquisite "Kyrie" by Rene Clausen, composed as a response to the horror of 9/11. Charlie Gilmer will accompany the Chorale on the piano, and there will be a string duo.
The program will be repeated on Sunday, May 11, at 4 p.m., at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Culpeper.
