Expo Bigger, Better
The Third Annual Piedmont Alternative Energy Expo, a project of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, is just over a week away. Organizers figure that rain or shine (shine would be more to the point) there will be even greater interest this year, since there is so much more interest in living and working "green" in the nation and in Virginia.
Visitors to the Expo will see an electric car, electric lawn tractors, a display of biodiesel production and use, exhibitions of insulation, a solar-powered tent, timber frame construction. Local logger Justin LaMountain will bring his Suffolk Punch team and demonstrate sustainable logging --- keeping the forest healthy.
Brad Schneider of Recovered Energy Resources in Washington, Virginia will explain how his company can take just about everything from a landfill and turn it into energy. There will be contractors offering displays of solar hot water, and solar photo voltaic panels to power the home. Green-thinking architects will be at their tables to show how an energy-efficient home can be startlingly beautiful.Nearly half of those on display at the Expo this year will be non-profit organizations, those who are working for legislation to encourage a small carbon footprint, those fighting the power lines, and others involved in education about alternatives.
Finally, visitors will be able to go for a ride on the Energy Bicycle; Virginia Tech's George Hagerman has built a bicycle that vividly demonstrates the power needed to make a light bulb glow!
