Credit card fraud on the upswing

Rappahannock County Sheriff Connie Smith wants to remind all citizens to be on the alert for credit card fraud. Smith warns that attempts at credit card fraud are always a threat. She urges citizens to be mindful, especially about email scams promising dubious refunds, awards, and prizes. The best thing to do, said the Sheriff, "is to delete any communication you are not certain of, without opening the message."

The Sheriff also warns that citizens should shed or burn any credit card offers arriving in the U. S. mail – offers, that is, one does not wish to accept. She notes simply trashing such offers invites thieves to lift information from the papers and use it to steal one’s identity.

As for the telephone, people should know not to reveal any personal information such as social security numbers to any caller who is a stranger.
