Preserve our farmland

By Larry and Kathy Grove and Steve and Lois Kerchner

When sprawl is looming, it’s good to know that there are organizations that work hard to keep our county scenic and open. The Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance is one of those groups.

Friday, May 16, the RCCA will again sponsor a dinner in recognition of those who donated conservation easements last year. These easements will forever protect 1000 additional acres in our county from development.

The evening will also raise funds for the county’s Farmland Preservation Program, another RCCA effort to protect our rural way of life. This program purchases the development rights from working farmers in exchange for easement protection of the land and is entirely funded by "roll back" taxes (the penalty imposed if landowners opt out of land use taxation) and private donations.

We will be attending the fourth annual Rappahannock Evening View on May 16at Caledonia Farm. We hope that you will join us...it's always a fun evening.
