A day to remember
By Jan Clatterbuck
As summer approaches, Memorial Day often provides a day off when families can get together for a picnic. But this day has been set aside for a very special reason. It is to honor those who have given their lives for this country or who are currently serving to protect our freedoms.
Let's take time on May 26 and raise the flag high and pause in prayer to say "thank you" for the free life we're living and another "Memorial Day" to appreciate all the deceased military.
We should feel proud every day for our beautiful flag and for the great fortune we have to be Americans.
The upcoming Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) will have their meeting on June 14 at 9 a.m. in the Rappahannock library. They welcome all -new applicants and veterans. For further info contact William B. Hill at 540-987-7256.

It is with great pride that the owner and staff of the Rappahannock News celebrates this 31-year birthday. The Rappahannock News was purchased in May 1977 by the Times Community chain of newspapers. We look forward to many more years of serving the community of Rappahannock County.
Birthday wishes go out to Erma Jenkins of Washington. She celebrated her special day on Tuesday, May 20.
Also birthday wishes go out to a special lady, Thelma Jenkins, who will celebrate her birthday on Sunday, May 25.
Buckle up or pay up!
The Rappahannock County Sheriff's Office will be out in full force ticketing all motorists that are violating traffic laws in Virginia with a particular emphasis being placed on lack of seat belt and child safety seat use. Special checkpoints and other stepped up law enforcement activities will be conducted during the Mobilization May 18-June 1, 2008.
So be sure to buckle up when you get in your vehicle before driving off.
