Dining out in Sperryville

Not only has spring brought the rains that have ended the drought, but it has also heralded an expansion both in the number of dining options and in the selection of offerings at our Sperryville Restaurants. We now have Thornton River Grille, Rudy’s, Burgers N’ Things, Stonewall Abbey (opening on May 31), Rae’s and Pellegatta’s Eatery. Here is a listing of each place and quick summary of new offerings, where applicable.

Thornton River Grille, continues to have rave reviews for its fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Chef Tom Nash and his staff offer creative gourmet meals with seasonal daily specials such as their recent soft shell crab. Open Tuesday –Saturday 11 a.m.to 9 p.m. and for Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Rudy’s, best known for its NY style pizza, giant calzone and stromboli, is greatly expanding the menu. Rudy’s will offer Buffalo Wings and fresh green salads starting this week. Within four weeks Tom and his staff will do their magic and you will also be able to enjoy a high quality take out menu that will include baked pasta with marinara sauce, lasagna with Italian sausage and red sauce, and possibly chicken parmigiana. Open from 4 – 9 p.m. seven days a week.

Stonewall Abbey will have its grand opening on May 31. They will serve Kona coffee, cappuccino, breakfast sandwiches, a selection of freshly made wraps and sandwiches for lunch, soup of the day, fresh scooped ice cream, desserts and much more. We are all looking forward to those Friday nights of music when Brian Compton and his friends, and local musicians, will be playing at the Abbey. This is the only place in town for a Monday morning cappuccino. Hours will be Mondays-Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays-7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays-12 noon-5 p.m.

Pellegatta’s Eatery, appreciated for its homemade soups and fresh sandwiches, has an ever expanding selection of homemade pies by Angela Minder. Recently her Key Lime pie was much appreciated by Richard Lykes. Sabre McWilliam, currently pastry chef at the Mimslym Inn and formerly at The Inn at Little Washington and Four & Twenty Blackbirds, now bakes a few days a week at Pellegatta’s. A few of the breads that emerge regularly from her oven include English muffins, honey wheat, rosemary, crusty Italian, rye-orange-caraway, Challah and sourdough. While I was interviewing her, Sabre was creating a divine mocha bread pudding. As we move into berry season she will create seasonal pastries with berries from her own organic garden. On Friday, May 30, Sabre will offer a free tasting of some of her specialty items for which customers can place special orders. Pellegatta’s is open Wednesday-Sunday from 7:30-3:30.

Rae’s fresh salads, sandwiches, homemade soups and international dishes have filled the hearts and souls of Rappahannock residents for years. Her daily specials are posted on the large white board in the restaurant and supplement her fixed menu. Recently she has added music festivals which are held about once a month at the restaurant. Rae is open Monday and Tuesday from 10:30 -3:30 and Thursday through Sunday from 10:30 – 8:30

Burgers N’ Things is our only fast food restaurant in the county. This family owned business on 211 has a faithful following for its burgers, fries and soft ice cream cones. They have added more outdoor tables for those who want to sit and enjoy their food next to the Thornton River. Hours are

Cleans Streams Act implemented

There are many examples of how the Clean Streams Act is helping to preserve and restore Rappahannock waters. I would like to tell you about two specific examples of implementation. There is a grant that will reimburse landowners to replace failing septic systems or outhouses that are within 300’ of a stream or river. One landowner has recently replaced an outhouse with a septic and drainfield and installed plumbing in the house. Another landowner consulted with Greg Wilchens from the Culpeper Soil and Conservation District office and developed a plan to redesign the drainage system on a steep mountain drive way that previously had resulted in extensive runoff directly into a stream that feeds the Thornton River. That work has been completed and its benefits were witnessed during recent heavy rains. We are very fortunate in this county to have RappFLOW and the organizations with which it partners to provide both education and practical services to the members of our community.
