Kathleen Grove, Head of School at Wakefield Country Day School in Flint Hill, has announced that senior Audrey Speer has been named a Commended Student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by Grove to this scholastically talented student, who is a resident of Amissville.

“Audrey exemplifies the personal excellence in each of the five pillars at Wakefield Country Day School. Just as this award recognizes her achievement in the pillar of intellect, Audrey’s national ranking in fencing recognizes her achievement in the pillar of fitness, her summer internship at the Library of Congress illustrates her achievement in the pillar of culture, her work with the Key Club represents her commitment to the pillar of service, and her consistently honorable behavior illustrates the pillar of virtue. We are all proud of this fine young woman,” Grove said.

Wakefield recently introduced a new goal strategy for its students called “The Five Pillars” that enables each student to strive for personal excellence. Faculty advisors meet with students regularly to discuss their five goal areas, which include intellect, fitness, culture, service and virtue.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
