Athletic field lights going up
Lights are going up at Panther Stadium. Musco Lighting and Beckstrom Electric are making significant progress on installing the lights in hopes of having them ready for the Homecoming Football Game on Saturday, Oct. 25.
As of Oct. 6 the four concrete bases (about 10 feet high) have been set and the conduit for the wiring is buried around the perimeter of the field. We have asked Allegheny Power to expedite its schedule for bringing electricity to the field to power the lights.
School closed
There is no school Thursday, Oct. 9 and Friday, Oct. 10. On Oct. 9 the RCPS will hold parent-teacher conferences at both schools from 2 – 5 p.m., and 6 – 8 p.m. RCHS will hand out report cards to parents who attend the conferences. The school will mail the remainder of the report cards on Oct. 10.
On Oct. 10 the RCPS is holding a Staff Development Day.
Enrollment
Rappahannock schools' enrollment is 927, up from projected 902. An official Sept. 30 enrollment figure will be announced at the October School Board meeting. State funding is based on average daily membership (ADM) from August through the end of March.
Energy usage
The RCPS has taken steps to reduce energy consumption. Supt. Chappell is tracking energy usage to determine if the steps are helping to conserve energy. "First we are starting with tracking electrical usage," Chappell explained. "Deliveries of diesel and heating oil are more sporadic, so we'll start tracking those mid-year. With just two months of electricity usage to compare we have been successful in reducing consumption by 13.4 percent. Average temperatures for the period were about two degrees higher last year, so the actual reduction in electricity usage is probably closer to 12 percent for the two-month period. With electricity costs skyrocketing by over 40 percent for the RCPS, we can't make up the total increase through conservation efforts. With the help of our employees I'm hopeful we can achieve a 20 percent reduction in energy usage for the year. That would put a big dent in the cost run-ups."
Bob Chappell is Superintendent of Rappahannock County Public Schools.
