Corner Store celebrates 150 years
Grilled bratwurst, Oktoberfest beer and polka music will greet you on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at an Oktoberfest celebration at The Corner Store. Enjoy Buck-a-Brat / Buck-a-Beer and free pizza samples that day. After 150 years of service to the community, this favorite gathering place continues to evolve to meet our shopping needs. The fresh seafood counter already has a loyal following. Artisan cheeses, a variety of olives and fresh produce make it easier to prepare dinner for those last minute guests.Specialty beers now fill the cooler and there is a large selection of local, domestic and international wine. There is nowhere else in the county but here to get “green” household products and, of course, Mary Ann’s famous chicken salad, peanut butter or chocolate brownies and pound cake.
So come enjoy the updated, expanded Corner Store. Explore the newly built second floor outdoor dining area with grill and celebrate the Thompson family’s renewal of Sperryville’s revered 150 year-old business.

Fall dining event
On Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Tom Nash is preparing a five course meal featuring locally grown products paired with Flying Dog Beer. This award-winning brewery originally opened in Colorado in 1990, but moved to Frederick, Md., in May 2006. Here is an example of what the dinner will feature: Fourth course is Mt. Vernon Farm’s lamb osso buco with parsnip puree and barley wine demiglaze, paired with Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter. This special fall dining event is only $55 per person. Call 987-9790 for reservations.
Stolen signs
Political campaign signs have been stolen on Water Street in Sperryville and in Harris Hollow. This theft has been reported to the sheriff’s department. I am both angry and sad that some people cannot allow for differences of opinion. This country was founded on the right of freedom of expression. I hope that whoever is stealing signs will stop immediately. We generally respect each other in Rappahannock and an election is an opportunity to listen and learn from each other, even when we do not agree. Those who are stealing signs can register and express their opinions through one of our fundamental rights and vote.
Lucy Grace 5k race
At nine weeks of age, Lucy Grace Adams of Sperryville became one of 2,500 infants who die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in the United States each year.
SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants under one year of age. To commemorate the life and spirit of this child, and to support SIDS research, the First Annual Lucy Grace 5K Race has been organized in Sperryville.
Proceeds will benefit both SIDS and the Rappahannock County School Sports Association. Runners can register online at www.lucygrace5krace.com or on race day between 7:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.
Registration fees are $20 if paid before Oct. 20; $25 after or on race day. Checks are payable to RCSSA at P.O. Box 100, Sperryville, VA 22740. For information, contact Melissa Harris, 540-987-9299 or Dave Gillis at 540-522-4301
Sunday breakfast
We have been asking for it and now we have it. The Compton family is opening Stonewall Abbey Cafe at 10 a.m. on Sundays in response to community requests, thus, filling a void left after Pellegatta’s closed, for a Sunday morning community gathering place. Thanks to the Compton family for listening.
Healing wishes
Catherine Jernigan is gravely ill and in the University of Virginia Hospital. Richard Lykes continues to make slow progress after his heart surgery. We send both our caring and loving thoughts and prayers.
