Free screening of 'The Beggar's Opera' at Avon Hall
The Châteauville Foundation will present on Sept. 27 a free, public screening of its recent production of "The Beggar's Opera" (a 18th century comic satire created by John Gay with musical arrangement by composer Benjamin Britten).
This musical comedy contains many popular songs. The high definition video production was recorded, in March 2008 when Maestro Lorin Maazel conducted "The Beggars Opera" at the Castleton Farms Theatre House. It was performed by incredibly talented young artists in The Châteauville Foundation's Castleton Residency Program.
The screening will begin at 7:30 p.m., (just after dark) and play about two hours. It will be held on the hillside lawn behind the county courthouse in Washington, Va., just off Gay Street and next to Avon Hall. The opera video will be shown on a large, outdoor screen.
Please bring your own chairs or blankets. No reservations are required. On-street parking is available nearby. In the event of inclement weather, the show will go on indoors at the Theater at Washington, Virginia on Gay Street.
In future columns there will be a listing of upcoming fall performances at the Castleton Theatre.
