try the new “house” traps… I think they’re made by Ortho, and they look kinda like a Glade Plug-In. Bait it w/ peanut butter. Doesn’t kill’em, though. They say you toss the trap away, but I put it in an empty cereal bag, open the door, let the mouse peek out, then flip him out and step on the bag; let’s me reuse the trap.
The note about my grandmother (Mrs Carroll Menefee) was nice to see. I will pass it along to my father (Carroll Menefee Jr.). He is doing well, plays golf regularly and is still able to beat his age (83). He’ll visit us this weekend at a horse show my daughter is riding in near where he lives.
If memory serves, I was just shy of seven when ‘Nanny’ passed away the next year (1961). I have fond memories of Sperryville. Many of these came from the kind efforts of Gene and Virginia Wood who made every effort, during the time I was stationed at Quantico, to show me Sperryville and introduce me to people my family would have known.
Thanks again for the note . . . from 50 years ago.
Beautiful photos, Chris! You have inspired me to take that hike. However, I guess I will have to wait until this big snow has come and gone!
Whatever happened to the other two Visitor Center Site Possibilities – the Link and Jerome’s Farmer’s Cooperative (the old Sperryville Antique Market)? What was the criteria used to decide on this building and not the other sites? and…surely this is a mistake $8.00/hour for a “manager” – this is a bit absurd or an error, which is it?
Ellen,
The Rapp Non-Profit Center management and Jerome can say for sure, but I think the other sites may go ahead with some kind of unofficial tourist-information centers, or what the Tourism Partners were calling “satellite” visitor centers. But even the Avondale center, as it’s currently proposed, doesn’t meet the standards for state support and highway signage — not until it’s open five days a week, including a Saturday and Sunday. And . . . $8/hour for a manager is what the Partners’ memo to the supervisors says.
How does one get hooked up with Alleghany Power? We were out for a total of 6 days, even as a member of the Lifeline Program with Rappahannock Electric.

I was hoping to see something about the blizzard that ravaged much of the U.S. from New England to Florida between 12 and 14 February 1899. It would be nice to compare reactions with those from this month’s snow dump.
Glad y’all are okay. You can send that snow back to the Pacific Northwest anytime you’re tired of it.
Actually, Virtual Virginia already does offer Chinese! Chinese 1, 2, 3, 4 and in the future, AP Chinese! Tai haole!
As a Virtual Virginia teacher, let me say thank you for this article. I know both of the students in the article and both are fine representatives of both Rappahannock County High School and Virtual Virginia, and in fact both have been featured in a video we produced about the program that can be seen on our website.
The support offered by your school to help students be successful in our program is remarkable, and I’m happy to be able to have students from your school in my AP Human Geography and AP Psychology courses.
Thank you, Tom, for your comments. I have heard students applauding your classes and am so thrilled that RCHS can offer these courses!
Thank you, Susan, for the correction. That is exciting news! I’m honestly hoping that some of our students take advantage of the offering.
Between 2005 and 2008, AmeriGas let my 1000 gallon tank run dry eight times. Each time they insisted it was a regrettable oversight. Finally, I realized it was more than that — that they were, in fact, simply indifferent to the consequences of my house running out of gas — and switched to another supplier. AmeriGas then forced me to pay $1500 for the tank (as was its right). Four months later, AmeriGas managed to get a truck onto the property and fill the tank again — even though they were no longer authorized to do so. Rather than argue with such people, I paid the bill and made sure they couldn’t get onto the property again.
I just read your “Storied Snowfall” and was very touched by members of the community making sure no one got stranded. I was very lucky the weekend of Februarys storm for not losing my electric. Please let everyone know that there are still plenty of good people in this world. I was impressed and touched by the employee Brittany who walked two miles two to take care of the dogs in the shelter. Way to go Brittany and other great citizens !! Good news Spring is almost here!!
