U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia announced Friday he’ll seek a third six-year term in Washington.
A former mayor of Richmond, governor of the commonwealth and vice presidential nominee, Kaine, a Democrat, said there’s still more he hopes to accomplish on Capitol Hill.
“I’m a servant. I love Virginia. I’m proud of what I’ve done. I’ve got a whole lot more I want to do,” Kaine, 64, said Friday in Richmond, as reported by the Associated Press.
Kaine handily won his 2018 election against Republican firebrand Corey Stewart, a former chair of the Prince William County Board of County Supervisors, with Kaine taking 57% of the vote to Stewart’s 41%. In 2012 – Kaine’s first run for Senate – the Democrat bested former Republican Sen. George Allen by taking 53% of the vote to succeed Democrat Jim Webb, who was not seeking reelection.
While Kaine and fellow Democratic Sen. Mark Warner – Warner being first elected to the Senate in 2008 – have kept Virginia's two seats in Democratic hands for more than a decade, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s victory over Democrat Terry McAuliffe in 2021 showed the commonwealth is still a critical swing state on the national stage.
Democrats currently hold a 51-49 majority in the U.S. Senate, while the House of Representatives flipped to GOP control following the 2022 midterms.
No Virginia Republicans have announced a U.S. Senate campaign for 2024.
Kaine's 2016 loss as a vice presidential candidate alongside Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was his first defeat in a bid for public office. Kaine and Clinton lost the presidency and vice presidency to former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Policy wise, Kaine has advocated for abortion rights and expanding health care coverage and argued against federal budget cuts that would significantly impact Northern Virginia. He supported the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, though, in the years before the pullout, repeatedly urged colleagues in Congress to take an up-or-down war authorization vote.
Kaine support expanding Metrorail service in Northern Virginia, including the Silver Line extension to Dulles International Airport and into Ashburn.
