No Art Goff, taking down that statue of Robert E. Lee is not “a slap in the face of all descendants of Confederate soldiers.”
It is an overdue acknowledgement of the symbolism it, and others like it, embody.
These monuments cannot be viewed as separate from the continuing oppression and terror they represent. Glorifying a mistake my great-grandfather made, now that is a slap in the face.
Insisting that symbols of hate and repression are innocent reminders of mint juleps and hoop skirts is not a position I expect to hear from my Commonwealth Attorney.
